I Individually am not on the view that Winchester at any time used mail order barrels from the factory to finish or fill orders. Determined by what I've noticed and browse in other sources, the oval (P) proof mark wasn't launched until eventually 1908. Ahead of that point, Winchester marked “OF” (outdoors fitted) on The underside of your barrel underneath the forend stock for the mail order barrels. I've see many of them on Model 1885 One Shot Rifles that predate 1908.

For the best of my know-how, for those who find a pre-1905 Winchester with a “WP” proof to the barrel, but not on the receiver, any person other than Winchester swapped the barrel.
